SFL America Lightweight championship highlights unique MMA card

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 4, 2016

TACOMA, Wash. – The Emerald Queen Casino will be the scene for a revolutionary concept in the world of professional mixed martial arts when SFL America: Team Challenge – Seattle vs. Portland takes center stage in Tacoma, Washington on Saturday.

The best MMA fighters in the Pacific Northwest will not only be fighting for themselves this time out, but also for their cities and teams as the event will also incorporate a scoring system.

Scores will be awarded to the winner of each contest with fighters earning 9 points for a KO, 7 points for a submission victory, 5 points for a TKO, 3 points for a decision and 2 points for a draw. The winning team will have the highest combined score for all six bouts.

“This team concept has been a long time in the making. We are ecstatic it’s finally fight week,” said SFL COO Brian Halquist. “We’ve worked on this concept for 5 years. It started as an idea to regionalize fighters and create a scoring system that makes sense. Get fighters from different cities to fight each other and see who comes out on top. There’s been MMA leagues tried before, but with no scoring system. Name a sports league that doesn’t keep score? It didn’t feel like a team or league because there was no score at the end. The incredible thing is these fighters and coaches have really gotten into the team concept. It’s going to be an incredible night of fights. Everything has worked out better than we imagined.”

Tickets are available through the EQC box office and all Ticket Master outlets. Doors open at 6 p.m. with preliminary bouts starting at 7 p.m.

The 8-bout card will feature two opening fights and six team battles, including a 125-pound women’s clash.

Comprising Team Seattle, which will be coached by UFC veteran Jeff “Hellbound” Hougland, will be current SFL America Lightweight champion Justin “Ruckus” Harrington (155 pounds), Zach Skinner (125), Shane Friesz (135), Joey Pierotti (170), Rafael Brewster (190) and Cindy Hales (female, 125).

Team Portland, coached by Nick “Savage” Gilardi, features undefeated Bryan Nuro (155), Benny Vinson (125), Journey Newson (135), Chris Evans (170), Jose McKay Rodriguez (190) and Liz Tracy (female, 125).

In the main event, Harrington (8-2-0) will defend his SFL America Lightweight championship against Nuro (4-0-0).
