OU Women’s Rugby Player Makes History as MMA Cage Fighter
She is no stranger to full contact sports; OU Rugby Player Jinnie Pratt is taking on a new challenge, UFC style cage fighting for one of Oklahoma’s most well-known mixed martial arts (MMA) promotions. Pratt will step into the cage for her debut fight Friday, January 16 at Rage in the Cage. The event will be held at the historic Oklahoma City Farmers Public Market, 311 S. Klein.
Pratt is a member of the Oklahoma Roses, The University of Oklahoma’s Women’s Rugby Club. She is a starter on the team, was nominated as a Collegiate All-American last year and played for the West All-Star 7s team at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California in 2013.
She has proven herself in the sport all while working 2 jobs and going to school. This Friday, she adds MMA cage fighter to her resume. “I’m already attached to MMA and really glad that I found this,” said Pratt. “It came out of nowhere and when those opportunities happen you just have to take them.”
Pratt had only recently taken up the sport of MMA after watching male rugby player Nathan Trepagnier’s career blossom as a mixed martial artist. “I watched Nathan make something out of this and was seeing how much he loves it and it rubbed off on me, said Pratt. “I just thought I would have a lot of fun with this and started training.”
She will fight Oklahoma City debut fighter Katie Wade Friday night. Wade trains out of R-1 Training Center in Del City, owned by UFC Champion and Oklahoma City Police Officer Matt Grice.
Pratt and Wade are set to make history as the first ever female cage fight for Rage in the Cage OKC. Twelve additional bouts are slated for this history making fight card, including a fight between 2 MMA giants standing at 6’8” and 6’9”.
