With another big weekend of mixed martial arts action in the books, it’s time to sift through the wreckage and find out who from the Pac NW made a statement. On Friday night while Pat Curran was taking his featherweight title away from Daniel Straus in the main event at Bellator 112, Portland’s own Nathan Coy was resting up in the back after winning a big unanimous decision victory over Paul Bradley. The win pushed Coy into the semifinals of the welterweight tournament and he will be facing Adam McDonough next who also picked up a unanimous decision victory on Friday night.
Saturday night was another great night of fights at the UFC 171 pay-per-view, where Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler put on a fantastic five round, back and forth, battle with both fighters slugging it out in the early rounds. The momentum seemed to be with Hendricks early, who avoided a lot of big counters from Lawler in the first few rounds. But in the third and fourth rounds, Lawler connected with some devastating shots that wobbled Hendricks and had him in a heap of trouble. Hendricks survived and both fighters looked hungry to win the fifth and final round of a very close fight. Using his NCAA pedigree, Hendricks relied on his wrestling to score a crucial takedown in the final round and maintain a dominant position until the round came to a close. Hendricks took the unanimous decision, and both Hendricks and Lawler took home Fight of the Night bonuses for the performance.
On the Fox Sports 1 undercard, Kelvin Gastelum - member of Team Sonnen and winner of The Ultimate Fighter season 17 - took on tough Pac NW fighter Rick Story. Both of these heavy-handed wrestlers battled it out for three rounds in a very close fight. Gastelum though did enough to walk away with the split decision win, which moves him to 3-0 inside the octagon, and two straight in the welterweight division after winning the middleweight Ultimate Fighter tournament.
This season of The Ultimate Fighter – Brazil continues to ramp up as the second episode premiered on Sunday night with the last of the initial wave of elimination fights to get into the house were completed. There looks to be a good mix of styles and skills to make this season interesting, but what has been most interesting is seeing the dynamic between the coaches which include West Linn, Oregon’s Chael Sonnen and Brazil’s Wanderlei Silva. The tension was already there before the start of the show, and it has only taken two episodes for that tension to spill over into the show. Fans have a great many episodes left to enjoy this season before the fight takes place between the two coaches, but it seems as though we won’t have to wait even that long for a few minor confrontations turned physical from these two passionate fighters. Be sure to tune in to this action and support Team Sonnen only on the UFC Fight Pass.
