“Seven Feathers Casino Resort is proud to host Oregon’s first Brian Halquist Productions’ CageSport MMA Fight on Saturday, May 5,” Seven Feathers Casino Resort General Manager Shawn McDaniel said. “We’ve had many guests ask for MMA and I am thrilled we have been able to work with Halquist Productions to bring it to Oregon.”
CageSport will hold its 50th show at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash. on April 28. The promotion has featured approximately 500 fights since its inaugural show in 2008 with more than 20 of its competitors going on to fight in the UFC, including former women’s world bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, Julianna Pena, Michael Chiesa, Nathan Coy, Cody McKenzie, Bryan Caraway, Sam Sicilia and John Albert. Three CageSport champions have fought for the UFC immediately after winning a CageSport title including: Julian Erosa, Anthony Hamilton, and Trevor Smith.
“We couldn’t be more excited that CageSport is heading to Oregon,” promoter and CageSport CEO Brian Halquist said. “Over the last 10 years we have seen numerous talented Oregon fighters make their way up to Tacoma to participate at a CageSport event, and we have also seen the MMA fans from Oregon make the trip to Washington to watch them fight. It’s time we come to them.”
San Jose, who trains out of Eugene’s Art of War MMA, sports a perfect 4-0 record and will look to capture his first professional title in the main event. The 29-year-old San Jose made his CageSport debut on Feb. 10 when he stopped Anthony Zender by first-round submission.
Vinson, training out of Gracie Barra Portland, is coming off an impressive second-round stoppage of Eric Higaonna at CageSport 48. Vinson notched career win No. 9 after submitting Higaonna, who entered the contest with an 8-1 record, at the Dec. 16 event.
Vinson, who has fought four times at CageSport, is undefeated fighting for the promotion.
“We have had hundreds of requests to promote the CageSport MMA brand in Oregon,” said Halquist. “Not only by the fighters and trainers, but by the Oregon MMA fans. We will deliver”
Former CageSport bantamweight champions include Pancrase veteran Victory Henry, Brandon Hempleman and Cory Vom Baur. After winning the CageSport bantamweight title, Hempleman went on to fight twice for the World Series of Fighting (WSOF).
“This is a perfect main event for our first CageSport show in Oregon,” Halquist said. “You have two Oregon natives battling for a championship. San Jose is undefeated. Vinson has never tasted defeat inside the CageSport cage. It’s going to be something MMA fans in the Pacific Northwest will not want to miss.”
Featured in the semi-main event will be former CageSport lightweight champion, Bryan Nuro (7-2) taking on veteran, Charon Spain (15-26). Nuro, training out of Portland’s Impact Jiu Jitsu, had an undefeated amateur record and has fought for the CageSport lightweight title three times, winning the title in 2016.
The undercard will feature a match between Medford’s Travis Cavalli (6-4) and Corvallis’ Justin Zabroski (2-1).
Additional fighters scheduled to be on the card include:
· Darrio Mobley (5-7) – Medford, OR
· Eric McConico (1-0) – Corvallis, OR
· Derek Rottenberg (Pro Debut) – Medford, OR
All fighters and many trainers (some who are former UFC fighters and trainers) will be available for interviews. Promoter Brian Halquist is also available.
