Two titles vacated as champions sign with UFC

TACOMA, Wash. – After handing Brent Knopp his first career defeat at Super Fight League 46, Jared Torgeson has overtaken the No. 1 contender slot for the SFL America light heavyweight championship.

Rankings for all seven weight divisions were released on March 3.

Torgeson was one of three fighters to move into the top contender spot in the new rankings, joining Jordan Currie (middleweight) and Albert Tadevosyn (welterweight).

A pair of SFL America titles have been vacated since the last rankings as former heavyweight champion Anthony Hamilton and former featherweight titlist Julian Erosa have both signed with the UFC.

Erosa will fight in a preliminary bout at UFC 197 on March 5, while fellow CageSport alum Miesha Tate challenges Holly Holm for the women’s bantamweight crown.

“The Northwest continues to be a hotbed for MMA talent,” promoter Brian Halquist said. “I think nothing shows that more than having two former CageSport/Super Fight League athletes appearing at a UFC pay-per-view event.”

Torgeson catapulted himself into the No. 1 contender after coming up with an upset victory at SFL 46, defeating Knopp, the current SFL America middleweight champion, by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Thomas Hoeper, who lost to Alfonso Gonzales in a bout for the vacant light heavyweight title, drops from first to second in the rankings.

Mike Hayes, former champion Matt Kovacs and Richard Foster clock in as the top three-ranked heavyweight contenders for the vacant title.

Daniel Swain and Drew Brokenshire remain first and second, respectively, in the featherweight division, both making strong cases for a championship match.

SFL America champions Justin Harrington (lightweight) and Tyson Cunningham (welterweight) have several quality contenders climbing the rankings.

Tadevosyn swapped positions in the welterweight rankings with Ben Egli, while Jason Novelli remains the top-ranked challenger for Harrington’s title.

There was no change in the top two bantamweight contenders with top-ranked Gary Mangat and second-ranked Ricky Simon chasing champion Victor Henry.

CageSport/Super Fight League returns to the Emerald Queen Casino on Saturday, May 7.
