MMA athletes from all over Ohio and beyond made their way to Mansfield for Revelation Fight Organization’s latest event.
RFO Big Guns 17 took place in Fairhaven Hall on the Richland County Fairgrounds on Oct. 17. Eleven fights took place, three of which were professional.
The highlights came fast and early. In the third amateur fight of the night, bantamweight Chaka “The Star Destroyer” Worthy (2-0) kept the fight standing against Thomas Morris (0-1) and delivered punishing body blows in route to a first round KO win.
A few fights later, in what was deemed “the battle of the beards,” amateur lightweights Dru Schottenheimer (8-8) and Jason Bevly (3-6) faced off. RFO promoter Matt Trukovich informed the crowd that during weigh ins, these two agreed that the loser had to get rid of his facial hair. Schottenheimer utilized his wrestling and superior grappling and came out on top with a unanimous decision, keeping his beard in the process.
It is rare to see a women’s bout in the RFO and this one did not disappoint. Amateur bantamweight Gemma Sheehan (3-0) – who came all the way down from Canada – used her strength to win a unanimous decision despite a late surge from her opponent Allison Ainley (4-2).
In the final amateur fight of the night, light heavyweight Aleksa Camur (3-0) took on Apineru vele (4-2). Vele landed heavy kicks early but Camur was able to regroup and come out with nasty combos in the second round. Those combinations led to a TKO win for Camur.
Kicking off the professional portion of the card was perhaps the best performance of the night. Middleweight Chico Bays (2-0) wasted little time in methodically attacking his opponent, Tony Dipiero (0-1), with head kicks and jabs. Chico’s crazy hand speed led to him dropping a game Dipiero early in the first round for a TKO win.
The lightweights were up next with John Gunther (2-0) facing off against Christopher Tucker (1-3). Tucker started off well in the clinch and landed some decent shots that backed up Gunther. But Gunther rallied, took him down, worked his way to back mount, and landed some ground n’ pound that forced the referee to call the fight a little over halfway through the first round.
A matchup that all of Mansfield was looking forward to was unfortunately cancelled when featherweight R.J. Buck (1-1) aggravated an already injured knee while warming up. His opponent, hometown favorite Mike Williams (2-4), expressed his disappointment to the crowd in a respectful manner when promoter Matt Trukovich called him to the cage to explain the situation.
Any disappointment the audience had didn’t last long as it was now time for the main event. Featherweight Josh Longood (2-0) walked out to the biggest ovation of the night as he was set to take on Kentucky’s Kendale Young (1-1). Young had the slight advantage in the striking department early as Longood attempted to take the fight to the ground to no avail. In the second round Longood finally managed to get the fight to the mat but Young reversed the position moments later, ending up on top. Despite being on the bottom, using swift Jiu-Jitsu, Longood was able to transition to an armbar that forced Young to tap. Longood kept his professional record unblemished.
